William "Bill" M. Gabel

William “Bill” M. Gabel of Rockford, IL passed away Sunday, August 21, 2022. He was born January 22, 1936, in Rockford, IL the son of Amelia (Schalla) and William J. Gabel. Bill attended St. Thomas High School for year and then went to West High School, graduating in 1953. Bill proudly served his country in the United States Marines from 1956-1958. He married the love of his life, Joanna (Peterson) on July 2, 1960. Bill worked as a manufacturing engineer for Sundstrand Corp for 43 years. Bill excelled in everything he put his mind to. He was an excellent golfer (numerous hole in ones), swimmer, baseball player, bowler (3 300 games) and fisherman. Bill enjoyed gardening and canning. He had a great sense of humor and was always there if you needed a helping hand. He was also an avid Chicago Cub and Bear fan. Bill will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him. From Bill to his golf buddies: “The best group of guys. He’s going to miss beating their buns!” From Bill: “Tell Bill Wright he’s always been a special friend of mine”.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Joanna Gabel; daughter, Dina (Manny Valadez) Gabel; sister, Darlene Beall; in-laws, Roberta (Roland) Edwards, Chris (Nita) Cowan and Rosie Van Buskirk. Bill is predeceased by his parents, William and Amelia and son, Brian Gabel.
