Barbara June Hammes

Barbara June Hammes, 92, of Rockford passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Wesley Willows Health Center. She was born August 28, 1921, in Champaign, Illinois to Kenneth Lund and Esther (Nofftz) Lund. She married Robert Hammes Sr. on June 6, 1944, in Rockford, Illinois. Barbara was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church where she was involved in the senior programs for a number of years. She volunteered for special needs programs including Barbara Olson School of Hope, Page Park School, Camp Sunshine and as an active mentor to parents of Down Syndrome children. She was also a past member of Macktown ladies golf league where she enjoyed many years of golf with her friends. Barbara was a 1939 graduate of Rockford Central High School and was a member of every class of '39 reunion committee for 70 years.
Survivors include: Sons; Richard (Leslie) Hammes of Ocala, Florida, Robert (Anne) Hammes Jr. of Rockford, Dave (Val) Hammes of Rockford, Daniel (Wendy) Hammes of Parker, Colorado, John Hammes and his fiancée (Rebecca Reynolds-Carr) of Rockford; Daughter, Carole Hammes of Rockford; Grandchildren, Kenneth (Jessica) Hammes and their children Sara, Isadora, and Freya-Ella. Kevin (Adena) Hammes and their children Aiden, Emily and Carter. Keith (Denise) Hammes and their children Kayleigh and Dustin. Matthew Hammes, Beth (Scott) Day and their children Keira, Nora, and Kaitlyn. Michael (Annie Lancaster) Hammes, Deanna Hammes, Deborah (Ryan Roum) and their children Addison, Thomas, Henry and William. Joanne (Stephen) Beagles, Josh Hammes, Rachel (Drew) Szaryc and their children Esther and Elizabeth. Rebecca Hammes, Ruth Hammes, Abigail Hammes, Hannah Hammes, Zackery Olson, Daulton Hammes, Taylor Hammes and Abigail Carr. Predeceased by her husband, Robert Hammes Sr.

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 19, 2014 at St. Bernadette Catholic Church. 2400 Bell Ave, Rockford, IL 61103. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Crematory 3910 N. Rockton Ave. Rockford 61103 and again from 9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. on Saturday in the Parish Center at the church.
