Brian W. Meyer, born on October 20, 1947, in Oak Park, Illinois, son to Kenneth and Lorraine (Cleve) Meyer, passed away peacefully at home on July 5, 2025, in Cherry Valley, Illinois. He was a beloved figure in the world of purebred dogs, celebrated for his dedication and passion for dogs that spanned a lifetime. Growing up in a family of dog lovers, specifically boxers, Brian’s love for canines was nurtured from an early age. He carried that love with him throughout his life, and into his future family’s lives. This profound love for dogs introduced him to Cynthia “Cindy” Marine. They met while working together for professional handlers Larry and Alice Downey. They wed on January 20, 1968. Brian started his career in 1969 when he became an AKC licensed professional handler. Through out the years he piloted many top-winning dogs from a variety of different groups. After over 30 years as a professional handler, Brian hung up his armband and pursued a new title, judge. Alongside his wife, they became a popular and highly regarded judging team. They judged extensively across the United States, also traveling to Belgium, China, Australia and Canada as AKC judges. Brian’s personality and dry sense of humor brought smiles to those around him and put all exhibitor’s both new and the most experienced at ease in his ring. At home, he cherished simple pleasures, such as maintaining a beautiful yard, spending time with his family, and enjoying ice cream dates with his wife. These moments reflected the warmth and joy he found in both his personal life and his professional endeavors.
He will be missed by those who loved him most, his wife of 57 years, Cindy; their children Kent (Gwen) Meyer, Lynn (Michael Allway) Meyer and Terri (Eben) Sutton; his favorite grandson, Luke Meyer; dogs Marilyn and Alex. He is predeceased by his parents Kenneth and Lorraine.
