Carl "Bert" H. Vespasian

Carl H. “Bert” Vespasian, 86, of Rockford, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 7, 2025. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, on May 30, 1939, to Carl J. and Hazel F. (Botkin) Vespasian, Bert lived a full and adventurous life.

He graduated from Lexington High School in Lexington, Illinois, and continued his education at Illinois State University, Southern Illinois University, and Bradley University. His professional journey was just as diverse, beginning with NASA and TWA, followed by being a franchise owner of the Amoco Station in Loves Park. He went on to enjoy a long and successful career in retail and auto sales, later working for Fitzgerald Funeral Home and Lowe’s.

On June 29, 2005, Bert married the love of his life, Janet (Woerner) Vespasian, in Rockford, Illinois. Together, they shared twenty wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and countless memories.

Bert’s passions were as unique as he was. He was an avid model railroader, known for his impressive indoor and outdoor layouts that were even featured in publications. He loved buying, repairing, and reselling cars, and auto racing. He was active in railroad clubs and had a deep affection for his dogs, including Passion and Nico.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jan; his brother, Lou Vespasian of Tulsa, Oklahoma; nieces and nephews Elizabeth (Ronnie) and Grant (Sarah), and six great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his children, Tony Vespasian of Mossy Rock, Washington, and Stephanie Vespasian of St. Cloud, Florida; grandchildren, Logan Allington and Parker Drescher; and stepson Eric (Stephanie) Cluver of Fort Collins, Colorado, along with their five children, Christopher, Cameron, Cayla (Grant) Atkins, Cara, and Caleb.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Jean Minkwitz; two infant children, Christopher and Nicole; and his niece, Laura.

Bert will be remembered for his kind heart, boundless curiosity, and the joy he found in his many hobbies and relationships. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, generosity, and love that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
