Chi-fan C. Lin, 87, of Rockford, passed away on July 22, 2025. He was born on October 9, 1937, in China, the son of Chia-fan and Lian-shen (Chen) Lin. He came to the United States to pursue advanced degrees. He earned his Master’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Illinois and his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Illinois Institute of Technology. He married the love of his life, Cecilia Cheng, on July 2, 1966. He worked as a Research Engineer for multiple steel companies in the Chicago area.
Chi-fan, also known as Ye Ye, loved his grandchildren and enjoyed cooking his famous beef noodles for them while sharing his many stories. He enjoyed gardening, swimming, and watching nature programs. He loved all animals and enjoyed taking his son to the zoo when he was younger. In his free time, he corresponded with some of his high school friends. He also enjoyed discussing Chinese history and world economics. He was a fun, loving, and caring husband, dad, and Ye Ye. While he was a quiet man, he had a big heart for his family.
He is survived by those who loved him most, wife, Cecilia; son, Maurice (Kerry); grandchildren, Keldon (fiancé Roselin) and Karissa; sister, Chi-ping Lin; and special friend and neighbor, Laverne Larson. He is predeceased by his parents and sister, Chi-yun Lin.
Private family services will be held. Cremation rites have been accorded.
