It is with heavy hearts and disbelief that we announce Gregory B. Hronik, 69, passed away on November 19, 2025, in his hometown of Rockford. Greg was born on August 24, 1956, the son of Otto and Norma (Schmelzer) Hronik.
In his working career, Greg started at Ingersoll Cutting Tool with a humble internship, which in turn gave him over two decades of experience and memories there before his retirement in 2015.
Greg was extremely proud of his son, Brent, and Brent's many accomplishments and successes. They shared a love of music, enjoyed cooking together, and often exchanged playful banter.
Greg was a cherished father, uncle, brother, and wonderful friend. He was undeniably handy and frequently assisted his friends and family with a variety of projects over the years. He was also the type of person who truly believed that laughter could solve almost anything, or at the very least, lighten the mood. He was a proud believer in spontaneous singing and reciting a good dad joke.
He loved watching NASCAR and the Chicago Bears, of whom he was an unapologetic fan—regardless of their performance. His favorite pastime was spending leisurely days fishing on a lake and taking fishing trips throughout the Midwest. Greg also excelled at trap shooting, regularly spending time at the range.
Being an astute observer, paired with his love for cats, Greg provided full bellies and shelter for many stray cats who made their way to his home, and a couple of them became permanent members of the family.
Greg embraced the role of an experimental chef, enjoying the opportunity to grill and smoke meat with joyful abandon. Cookbooks and cooking shows were a guilty pleasure; they helped guide him through culinary adventures – and misadventures- that could fill the kitchen with laughter and aroma.
Several years ago, Greg embarked on a journey of love with his partner, Judy Taber. He developed a close bond with Judy's mother, Joan. He happily spent time with Joan and often prepared some of her favorite foods. Greg was also a supportive person in the lives of Judy’s children and grandchildren.
His sudden and unexpected passing leaves a deep void amongst his family and friends. Still, the cherished moments, songs sung, fishing trips enjoyed, and laughter shared will forever remain in the hearts of everyone who had the honor of knowing him.
Greg is survived by his son, Brent, and Brent’s mother Glenda (Jeff) Gifford; his best friend and probably better half, Judy, along with her beloved family; his siblings Kathy (Andy) Frost, Steven (Sue) Hronik, and Marcia (Rob) Johnston; beloved nieces Andrea (Nolan) Robinett and Katie Johnston; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Greg valued and cherished his very close friends Rob and Curt, as well as the Maggio family. Last, but certainly not least, he treasured Weasle, his beloved feline companion.
He is predeceased by his parents, Otto and Norma, as well as other past family cats.
A time to gather and celebrate Greg’s life will take place on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, from 11 a.m. until the time of sharing at 12:30 p.m. at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Road, Rockford, Illinois 61108. Please bring a good (and appropriate) story about your memories of Greg, or we will have to listen to a live rendition of Queen’s "Bohemian Rhapsody," sung by Brent and Andrea, to fill the time.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorials to Brent; a special location is being decided for people to spend time alone in reflection of Greg. If you are unable to attend the time of sharing, please feel free to send online condolences or share memories at www.fitzgeraldfh.com
