Harold K. Higgenbotham Jr., 88, left our world on January 11, 2026, in Rockford, Illinois. Harold was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin on December 17, 1937, son to Harold and Ruby (Halverson) Higgenbotham Sr. He would go on to graduate from Ithaca High School before moving to Illinois, then spent over 35 years working various positions within Chrysler, retiring in 2001. Marriage to his beloved wife, Audrey Malo, in 1957 marked the beginning of an enduring partnership that flourished for nearly four decades. Together, they embarked on journeys that took them to the exciting casinos where Harold would try his hand at lucky winnings (Audrey notably being lucky a few times herself), to Las Vegas' dazzling lights, and to the gentle sway of riverboats where cherished memories were made. As they roamed from car show to car show, Harold’s red 1957 Thunderbird, a radiant symbol of their life's shared joy, stood adorned with awards and trophies, each one a tribute to his attention to detail and passion for the things that brought him joy. Their union was a testament to lifelong affection and commitment, although the world grew dimmer for Harold after Audrey's passing in 2001. Harold's connection with his family would remain rich and vibrant, not just with his wife’s memory, but also his bond with his son, Glen. They shared moments of exuberance, cheering on the Green Bay Packers, relishing in the camaraderie that only sports can ignite. Harold would introduce Glen to the world of car shows, and Glen would go on to win a few awards himself. The playful presence of Sam, Harold’s beloved parakeet and sidekick, added an additional layer of fun to their lives. Harold was not only a devoted husband and father, but also a man with an infectious sense of humor. He loved a good joke and relished the light-hearted exchanges with friends. Those who knew him couldn’t help but smile when recalling his wit and spirit. This jovial personality extended to the nursing home where he lived; after losing Audrey, Harold found a second home at Amberwood Care Center, where the devoted staff—Tonia and numerous others—became an integral part of the rest of Harold’s life, yet again reminding him of family. His compassion for those he cared about was evident as he stood up for the nurses against anyone who may have given them a hard time; illustrating a man who knew how to enjoy life but maintained respect and fairness to those around him.
He will be missed by his son, Glen (Peggy Johnson) Higgenbotham; grandchildren Eric and Aaron, and great grandchildren Aiden and Chloe Higgenbotham; he will also be missed by numerous staff at Amberwood. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Audrey, his parents Harold and Ruby, as well as his sidekick Sam.
