James “Jay” Adkins, 85, of Rockford, died Monday, Dec. 15, 2014 in his home. He was born on August 16, 1929 in Benton, the son of Clyde and Elva (Carney) Adkins. Jay is a veteran of the United States Army and went on to become an inspector at Chrysler for 30 years. He was an amateur boxer, enjoyed yard work and caring for his numerous tomato plants. Jay was a kind, gentle man, who would do anything for anyone, if he only had a dime, he would find a way to give a quarter. He will be greatly missed by those who loved and respected him for the person he was. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Jaime and Debbie for taking such good care of Jay and to Transitions Hospice.
Survivors include his brother, Phil Adkins; nieces and nephews, Shon, Kathy, Richard, Packey and Vicki and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth; sisters-in-law, Jan and Frances Adkins; nephew, Monte Adkins; nieces-in-law; Mary Ann Engelhart and Teresa Edwards.
Funeral service Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Spring Creek United Church of Christ, 4500 Spring Creek Rd. with Rev. Ivan Schoen officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be held later that afternoon in Highland Garden of Memories Cemetery, Belvidere. Per the family no flowers or monetary donations.
