Lawrence Wayne Van Vleck

August 20, 1948 – July 20, 2025

Lawrence Wayne Van Vleck, age 76, of Rockford, Illinois, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 20, 2025. Born on August 20, 1948, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Lawrence lived the majority of his life in Rockford, where he was a devoted father, brother, friend, and neighbor.

Lawrence was drafted into military service on January 20, 1969, and served honorably as a Combat Engineer in Vietnam, receiving multiple commendations and medals for his service to our country.

Lawrence redefined what it meant to be a father and a family man. For him, family wasn’t limited to blood—it was built through love, loyalty, and the way you show up for others. He embraced those around him fully, giving his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren a deep understanding that family is not just who you are born to, but who you choose to love and stand beside. Many called him “Dad” not because they had to—but because he truly was.

A man of many talents and boundless energy, Lawrence was most at home on the water. He was affectionately known as “The Legend” among friends and family, often leading outings across Illinois, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. He loved taking his children, relatives, and neighbors fishing—and he always seemed to know where the fish were biting. His adventurous spirit also led him to scuba diving, skydiving, hiking, mountain biking, billiards, pickleball, and more.

Lawrence’s generosity extended far beyond his family. A skilled mechanic, he generously offered free repairs to friends and loved ones for years. He volunteered at Hoo Haven Wildlife Rehabilitation, helping nurse sick and injured wildlife back to health, and was a regular volunteer and coordinator at the SMSF, Baltic, and 3L Clubs of Rockford—always willing to lend a hand with events, food prep, or whatever was needed. He also quietly helped neighbors with home repairs, lawn care, and anything else they needed.

Lawrence dedicated over 38 years of his professional life to Greenlee Textron, where he worked in multiple roles including machinist and quality control inspector. Known for his strong work ethic and steady presence, he took great pride in his work and the relationships he built over the years.

Lawrence’s life was also grounded in his faith. He read scripture regularly and held firm to values shaped by its teachings. He was deeply grateful to have become Catholic, receiving several Sacraments that held great meaning to him and brought him peace and purpose in his later years.

Lawrence approached life with humility and curiosity, showing us all that a meaningful life isn’t measured by possessions, but by how deeply you care for others and how fully you live. He showed up every day, for his family, his community, and his country.

Lawrence is survived by his children Tina (David) Tallent of Rockford, IL, Regina (Chris Roach) Bliss of Central, SC, Michael (Denisse) Van Vleck of Mesa, AZ, and Nicole Replogle of South Beloit, IL; 8 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren; his siblings Rita Dublo and Mark (Denise) Van Vleck, both of Rockford; Sandy (Jack) Horner of Pecatonica, IL; and Stephanie (Damon Pierce) Carlson of Wolverine Lake, MI.

He was preceded in death by his parents Wayne Van Vleck and Eva (Nichwander) Fischer, sister Marian Vowell and grandson Anthony Michael Van Vleck.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 2nd at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1010 Ferguson St., Rockford, IL 61102. Public visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m. Burial will take place immediately after the service at Calvary Cemetery, with a family luncheon to follow in the church community center.
