Mary Ellen Roehrig, 53, of Rockford died peacefully April 21, 2014 at Amberwood Nursing Center. Born March 1, 1961 in LaSalle, IL and came to live with her parents, Phillip J. and Linda Roehrig on June 2, 1964. Mary was formally adopted on January 18, 1965. She attended Guilford Center School in Rockford, Lindberg School in Kenmore, NY; Cathedral School, Highland School and St. James School all in Rockford, graduating in 1975. She went on to Boylan High School and East High School and earned her G.E.D. from Rockford Public Schools. Mary was involved in the Stepping Stones program in Rockford for well over 30 years and received much care and support from them. Mary was an exuberant child, who always had a smile on her face and a greeting for everyone; a trait which she kept throughout her life. She was a caring, supportive person to her many friends and family members.
Survivors include her mother, Linda; brother, Phillip of Tampa, FL; special friend, Nancy Vindstrand, as well as uncle, Jerry French, aunt, Carshon Evans, uncle, Mike Twombly and several extended family members whom she cared about deeply. She was predeceased by her father, Phillip in 2013; grandparents, great-grandmother and several aunts and uncles.
Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Gerard Christenson officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25 at Fitzgerald Funeral Home & Crematory, 1860 S. Mulford Rd., Rockford, IL 61108 and also from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass at the church. Private interment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery for the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mary's name to Stepping Stones Program in Rockford to help those affected by mental illness. The family wishes to thank Heartland Hospice, Amberwood Nursing Center and SwedishAmerican Hospital staff for their kindness and care
