Ralph Helmer Bergstrom passed away peacefully on June 30, 2025, with his beloved wife, Carolyn (Dyball) by his side, after courageously battling cancer since last September. His passing marks the close of a life defined by integrity, devotion, and a commitment to family, faith, and community.
Born in Chicago and raised in Oak Lawn, Illinois, Ralph was shaped by humble beginnings and a determined spirit. He worked hard for everything he achieved — earning a college degree from Eastern Illinois University, building a successful and honorable career, and most importantly, nurturing a loving family.
It was at Eastern Illinois where Ralph met the love of his life, Carolyn. Married on March 28, 1959, they shared 67 remarkable years of marriage marked by unwavering support and deep friendship. Together, they created a beautiful family, which was Ralph’s greatest pride and joy.
Ralph devoted his professional life to serving the public, spending his entire career with the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS. His work was not only a profession but a reflection of his steadfast principles—honesty, diligence, and a commitment to justice.
Faith played a central role in Ralph’s life. He was actively involved in his church community, finding strength and purpose in his beliefs. His energetic spirit and love for life were evident in the way he embraced every day. Whether refereeing high school football and basketball, running, swimming, or cycling, Ralph led an active and fulfilling lifestyle well into his later years.
Ralph and Carolyn found incredible joy in their community in Sun City and later Wesley Willows, where they made many dear friends. Ralph was a devoted fan of all Chicago sports teams, and perhaps most proudly, the number-one fan in the stands for his grandchildren’s sporting events.
Ralph was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his sons: Todd (Barb), Roger (Peggy), and Eric; his cherished grandchildren: Max (Elizabeth), Karly (Mark), Allee (Kyle), Emma, Hanna, Luke, Jacob, Morgan, Ryan, and Rachel; and his great-grandson, James Fredrick, son of Max and Elizabeth. He was preceded in death by his parents, Knut & Helen Bergstrom, who now welcome him with open arms.
Ralph’s legacy is one of love, perseverance, and a life well-lived. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Ralph’s life will be held at Roscoe United Methodist Church, 10816 Main St, Roscoe, IL 61073, on July 19, 2025, with a memorial service beginning at 11:00 am.
