Deacon Richard F. Gerdeman Jr., 81, of Rockford, passed away on April 4, 2024.
Richard was born in Lima, Ohio, on July 11, 1942, the son of Richard F. and Rosemary (Schimpf) Gerdeman. He married Sharon (Colgrove) Gerdeman on January 30, 1965, in Winamac, Indiana. Richard's journey was a remarkable one, filled with dedication, compassion, and service. After serving his country in the U.S. Navy, Richard embarked on a fulfilling career path that touched the lives of many. In 1966, he made Rockford his home to work at Twin Disc. Later, he went on to establish Rich Gerdeman Wood Finishing, leaving a lasting legacy in the business world until 1984. However, it was Richard's role as Chaplain at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center for 18 years that truly showcased his selflessness and unwavering commitment to helping others. His ordainment as a Deacon in 1996 only further solidified his deep-rooted faith and desire to provide spiritual guidance to those in need.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Richard had a wide range of hobbies and interests that brought him joy. An avid fisherman, he found peace and tranquility by the water. He also enjoyed square dancing, golfing, landscaping, and yearly visits to Florida where he could relax and soak in the sunshine.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; his children, Kelly J. (Kenneth) Witt, and Richard F. (Katya) Gerdeman III; grandchildren, Skyler and Patrick Gerdeman; sisters, Nancy, Kathy, Betty, and Wendy. He is predeceased by his parents; daughter, Kristin Marie; brother, David Gerdeman and stepmother, Florence Bozeman.
