Stephan “Steve” Todd Freeman, 55, of Rockford, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 5, 2026 surrounded by his loving mother, brother, and sister.
Steve was born September 18, 1970, in Rapid City, South Dakota, the son of Kenneth G. and Evelyn (Barnes) Freeman. He graduated from Jefferson High School and proudly worked at the Rockford Public library for more than 20 years.
Steve lived life with joy, kindness, and an infectious smile. He never met a stranger, greeting everyone with a warm handshake or heartfelt hug and making lasting friendships wherever he went. Above all, he cherished spending time with his family, friends, and his dear friend, Erika.
Steve embraced every opportunity to serve his community and pursue his passions. He enjoyed painting at The Arc, competing in numerous Special Olympics sports, participating in activities through Rockford Park District Therapeutic Recreation and GiGi's Playhouse, and volunteering with the Rockford Police CAPS Program.
Throughout his life, Steve achieved many meaningful milestones. He proudly served as a Global Messenger for Special Olympics, earned the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, became a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus with St. Joseph the Worker Council #15530, and dedicated two decades of service to the Rockford Public Library. His determination, generosity, and positive spirit touched countless lives and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Steve is lovingly survived by his mother, Evelyn Freeman; his sister, Sheehan (Jason Todd); his brother, Scott (Jodie) Freeman; and his nephew, Miles, and niece, Kenna.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Freeman; his beloved nephew, Jacob Todd; and his maternal and paternal grandparents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Steve’s name to Gigi’s Playhouse of Rockford, Rockford Special Olympics and Northen Illinois Hospice.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, July 17, 2026, at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 2400 Bell Avenue, Rockford, IL 61103.
