Susan H. Morris

February 14, 1952 — June 1, 2026

Rockford

Susan H. Morris, 74, of Rockford, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2026, after a short battle with cancer.

Susan (Sue) was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 14, 1952, to Walter and Arlene (Shea) Hamilton. A proud South Side Irish Catholic, she attended Mother McAuley High School before continuing her education at Valparaiso University, where she joined her sorority and formed many lifelong friendships. She later transferred to Northern Illinois University, where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in speech therapy.

Sue began her career as a speech therapist in the hospitals before finding her true calling in early childhood intervention. She had a remarkable ability to dream up activities that resonated with children, making learning feel engaging, personal, and fun. She approached each child with warmth and encouragement, always looking for ways to help them shine.

That same creativity and care carried into other parts of her life. As a mother and grandmother, Sue was always planning family gatherings, special outings, and memorable adventures. She found joy in bringing people together and creating lasting memories for those she loved.

Family was Sue's north star. She planned reunions, traveled with her sister Louise, and created and carried on family traditions. Friends were equally important to her. She maintained friendships throughout every stage of her life and made time for phone calls, walks, lunches, concerts, and long conversations. She collected friendships like rare coins, holding them close and nurturing them over the years.

In her later years, Sue found comfort and a home once again in the Catholic Church. She was devoted to her faith and an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Rockford. Sue will be remembered for her warmth, honesty, deep loyalty, and her ability to make people feel valued and connected. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Surviving relatives include her children, Elizabeth (Matthew) Gerber and Chris (Renee) Morris; grandchildren, Nolan Gerber, Jackson Morris, and Lucy Morris; siblings, Walter (Laura) Hamilton, Louise (John) Starmann, and Patrick (Mary Pat) Hamilton; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Susan was predeceased by her parents.
