Thomas J. Heffran

Thomas Joseph Heffran, age 90, was born December 7, 1933, on North 1st Street and left his earthly life to begin eternal life on February 3, 2024, at 727 North 1st Street at 7:27 a.m.

Tom graduated High School in 1951 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After the Navy, he worked for Larson Sand & Gravel and Greg Anderson Co. until he started his own company, H&H Trucking. Tom leased his trucks to Stahly Cartage Co. pulling tankers across the U.S. and Canada.

He married Helen M. Lubow on November 4, 1972, in Rockford, IL. Together they raised 13 wonderful children. Tom was a lifetime member of St. James Catholic Church for 90 years where he was baptized, confirmed and married. He was a member of the Navy Club Ship 1 for 71 years, holding offices in local, state and national divisions. Tom also belonged to the American Legion and the Moose Club. He loved car racing, animals and even earned the nickname, “squirrel whisperer”.

Tom is survived by his wife, Helen Heffran; children, Rosemary Hope, Shirley Heffran, Theresa Heffran, Karen Heffran, Kathy Heffran, Mary Jo Johnson, Thomas Heffran Jr., Michael Heffran, Dallas Heffran, Beverly Gallagher, Russell Heffran, Beth Lowry and Michele Bast; 23 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his parents, Homer and Catherine (Green) Heffran; brother, Ross Heffran and son, baby David Heffran.

Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 10, 2024, with visitation from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass at St. James Catholic Church (Beauvais Center), 428 North 2nd Street, Rockford, IL 61107. Burial will conclude in St. Mary/St. James Catholic Cemetery, Rockford, IL.
