William H. Atwood

William H. Atwood, age 53, of Machesney Park, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 15, 2026. 

William was born in Rockford, IL, on July 16, 1972, the son of Henry and Barbara (DeWane) Atwood. He graduated from Belvidere High School and went on to earn a degree in Police Science from Rock Valley College. William proudly served his country in the United States Army National Guard 244th Chemical Company. He later began his career with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office as a correctional officer in 2013, dedicating more than a decade of honorable service.

William married his best friend and love of his life, Bethany Norman, on November 1, 1997. Their greatest joy in life was welcoming their beloved son, Will in 2014.

William will be most remembered for his humble nature, selflessness and the consistent, dependable support he provided to his family and friends. He also had a servant's heart and outstanding work ethic and led by example. In addition, he was honored to serve as assistant scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 139 in Rockford, IL where he was able to enjoy spending time with his son. He will be deeply missed though we rest in the hope of God's promise of being reunited one day.

Those left to honor William’s memory include his loving wife, Bethany Atwood; their son, Will Atwood; in-laws, Carroll and Joyce Norman; close family: Marilyn Hill, Kahla Hill, Kerry (Sandy) Hill, Kyle (Jen) Hill and Ron (Connie) Vetter; and sister Beth Robbins. William is predeceased by his parents and brother-in-law, Michael Norman.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2026, with visitation from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at City First Church, 5950 Spring Creek Rd, Rockford, IL 61114. A committal service will conclude in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Machesney Park, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Atwood family to be dedicated to his son’s education.
